In Spring of 2009, as a nonprofit organization, we will hold a fundraiser and technology drive in Grand Rapids, MI. The goal is to invite people (nerds and non-nerds) from West Michigan and beyond who will donate their time, skills and money to the project for an evening. From this we hope to have 100 working laptop computers (meeting minimum requirements), 100 one-year broadband internet accounts, 100 volunteers, and 100 eligible clients.
If we can reach most of these goals on or in close proximity of the Geek-a-thon event, we will begin the Earn-a-laptop program with our first group of clients (ideally with a common meeting-place already established). At this meeting-place we will hold the first orientation classes and digital literacy workshops. We will also have hours available to our clients, with volunteers to assist technical support efforts.
